以丁本生父憂歸，命治喪畢赴軍，未行，詔署山東鹽運使，擢署巡撫，疏乞終制，不許。 He returned home to observe mourning for his biological father and was ordered to join the army once the funeral rites were finished; before he could depart, an edict appointed him acting Shandong salt transport commissioner and then acting governor. He memorialized begging to complete his mourning obligations, but permission was refused.
