初為太原牙校，以武勇聞於流輩，武皇、莊宗之世，累補左右突騎軍使。 He began as a military aide at Taiyuan and won a reputation for courage among his peers. Under Emperor Wuzong and Zhuangzong he rose repeatedly to command the Left and Right Flying Cavalry.
