更始立，以茂為侍中祭酒，從至長安，知更始政亂，以年老乞骸骨歸。 After Emperor Gengshi took the throne Mao became Libationer among Palace Attendants and accompanied the court to Chang'an; seeing how chaotic the regime was, he cited age and retired home.
