茂陵杜鄴與欽同姓字，俱以材能稱京師，故衣冠謂欽為「盲杜子夏」以相別。 Another Du Ye of Maoling shared his surname and courtesy name; both were known in Chang'an for their gifts, so the gentry dubbed our man "the blind Du Zixia" to tell the two apart.

欽惡以疾見詆，乃為小冠，高廣財二寸，由是京師更謂欽為「小冠杜子夏」，而鄴為「大冠杜子夏」云。 Qin resented the nickname, so he took to wearing a tiny cap barely two inches high and wide; thereafter Chang'an called him "Little-Cap Du Zixia" and the other "Big-Cap Du Zixia."

卷八十五谷永杜鄴傳第五十五 Volume 85, the fifty-fifth biography: Gu Yong and Du Ye.

永於經書，泛為疏達，與杜欽、杜鄴略等，不能洽浹如劉向父子及揚雄也。 Gu Yong's learning in the classics was broad but superficial, roughly equal to that of Du Qin and Du Ye, though not as thorough as that of Liu Xiang and his son or Yang Xiong.

杜鄴字子夏，本魏郡繁陽人也。 Du Ye, styled Zixia, was originally from Fanyang in Wei commandery.

鄴少孤，其母張敞女。 Ye lost his father young; his mother was a daughter of Zhang Chang.

鄴壯，從敞子吉學問，得其家書。 As a grown man he studied under Zhang Ji and inherited the Zhang family library.

鄴見音前與平阿有隙，即說音曰：「鄴聞人情，恩深者其養謹，愛至者其求詳。 Ye saw Yin's old rift with Ping'a and urged him: "I have heard that deep grace calls for careful nurture and great love calls for thorough scrutiny.

音甚嘉其言，由是與成都侯商親密，二人皆重鄴。 Yin greatly approved his words; from this he grew intimate with Marquis of Chengdu Shang, and both men valued Ye.

商為大司馬衛將軍，除鄴主簿，以為腹心，舉侍御史。 When Shang became grand marshal and general of the guards, he appointed Ye chief clerk as trusted inner counsel and recommended him as attendant censor.

哀帝即位，遷為涼州刺史。 When Emperor Ai took the throne, Ye was transferred to be inspector of Liang province.

鄴居職寬舒，少威嚴，數年以病免。 Ye in office was easy and relaxed, with little severity; several years later he was dismissed on account of illness.

扶陽侯韋育舉鄴方正，鄴對曰：臣聞禽息憂國，碎首不恨； Marquis of Fuyang Wei Yu recommended Ye as a blunt critic; Ye answered: Qinxi broke his head for the state and felt no regret;

鄴未拜，病卒。 Du Ye died of illness before he could take office.

鄴言民訛言行籌，及谷永言王者買私田，彗星隕石牡飛之占，語在《五行志》。 Du Ye on the rod divinations and Gu Yong on the emperor's private land, comets, meteors, and flying gate-bolts are recorded in the Treatise on the Five Phases.

初，鄴從張吉學，吉子竦又幼孤，從鄴學問，亦著於世，尤長小學。 Ye had studied under Zhang Ji; Ji's orphaned son Song studied under Ye in turn and won fame, especially in philology.

鄴於林，清靜好古，亦有雅材，建武中歷位列卿，至大司空。 His son Du Lin was quiet, fond of antiquity, and endowed with refined talent. During Jianwu, he served successively among the ranked ministers and rose to Grand Minister of Works.

其正文字過於鄴、竦，故世言小學者由杜公。 He surpassed father and master in textual criticism, so later scholars trace philology to the Du house.

故杜鄴敢譏丁、傅，而欽、永不敢言王氏，其勢然也。 So Du Ye could mock the Ding and Fu, while Du Qin and Gu Yong kept silent on the Wangs—such was the force of circumstance.

及欽欲挹損鳳權，而鄴附會音、商。 When Du Qin tried to check Wang Feng, Du Ye curried Wang Yin and Wang Shang instead.

初，成帝性寬，進入直言，是以王音、翟方進等繩法舉過，而劉向、杜鄴、王章、朱雲之徒肆意犯上，故自帝師安昌侯，諸舅大將軍兄弟及公卿大夫、後宮外屬史許之家有貴寵者，莫不被文傷詆。 Cheng's easy temper invited blunt speech, so ministers such as Wang Yin and Zhai Fangjin policed the law while scholars like Liu Xiang, Du Ye, Wang Zhang, and Zhu Yun flayed the throne; from the imperial tutor the marquis of Anchang through the Wang uncles and every powerful consort kin of the Shi and Xu lines, no favorite escaped their written attacks.
