馬榮者，迤西回酋杜文秀之黨，之銘檄署武定營參將。 Ma Rong was a follower of Du Wenxiu, the Hui chieftain of western Yunnan, whom Zhiming appointed acting battalion commander of Wuding Camp.

事定，疏奏諉為杜文秀勾結武定匪犯省城，又諱匿馬榮委署參將事。 When the affair was settled, he memorialized blaming the attack on Du Wenxiu's collusion with Wuding bandits, and also concealed Ma Rong's acting appointment as battalion commander.
