少與崔浩為莫逆之交。 In youth he and Cui Hao were the closest of friends.

浩為司徒，奏徵為中郎，辭疾不赴。 When Hao became Minister Over the Masses, he memorialized to summon Suikua as Palace Gentleman, but Suikua pleaded illness and did not go.

州郡逼遣，不得已，入京都，與浩相見。 Pressed by the prefecture and commandery, he had no choice but to enter the capital and see Hao.

浩每欲論屈之，竟不能發言，其見敬憚如此。 Hao always meant to argue him into submission, yet could never bring himself to speak—such was the respect and awe he inspired.

浩後遂投詔書於誇懷，亦不開口。 Later Hao thrust the edict into Suikua's bosom, but Suikua still would not speak.

誇曰：「桃簡，卿已為司徒，何足以此勞國士也？ Suikua said, 'Taojian, you are already Minister Over the Masses—why bother a man of the realm with this?

桃簡，浩小名。 Taojian was Hao's childhood name.

浩慮誇即還，時乘一騾，更無兼騎，乃以誇騾內之廄中，冀相維縶。 Fearing Suikua would leave at once—he had only one mule and no second mount—Hao stabled Suikua's mule in his own stable, hoping to keep him there.

浩知而歎曰：「眭誇獨行士，本不應以小職辱之，又使其人杖策復路，吾當何辭以謝也！」 When Hao learned of it he sighed and said, 'Suikua is a man who walks his own path—I should never have insulted him with a petty post, and now to make him walk staff in hand on the road again—what apology can I possibly offer!'

浩仍相左右，始得無坐。 Hao continued to support him on every side, and in the end Suikua escaped punishment.

經年，送誇本騾，兼遺以所乘馬，為書謝之。 A year later Hao sent back Suikua's original mule, together with the horse he himself had ridden, and wrote a letter of apology.

及浩沒，為之素服，受鄉人弔唁，經一時乃止。 When Hao died, Suikua wore unhemmed mourning and accepted condolences from fellow townspeople, continuing for a time before he stopped.

歎曰：「崔公既死，誰能更容眭誇！」 He sighed and said, 'Now that Lord Cui is dead, who will still tolerate Suikua!'

杜超之贊成之，[6]崔浩又言西伐利。 Du Chao backed the plan; [6] Cui Hao again argued the gain of a western war.

帝命歌工歷頌羣臣，曰：「智如崔浩，廉如道生。」 The Emperor had singers pass among the ministers in praise, saying: "Wise as Cui Hao, spare as Daosheng."

初，李靈為高宗博士、諮議，[1]詔崔浩選中書學生器業優者為助教。 Earlier, Li Ling had served Emperor Gaozong as Erudite and Consulting Aide. An edict ordered Cui Hao to choose the most capable students at the Secretariat school to serve as assistant teachers.

浩舉其弟子箱子與盧度世、李敷三人應之。 Hao nominated his own disciple Xiangzi, together with Lu Dushi and Li Fu, for the appointments.

給事高讜子祐、尚書段霸兒姪等以為浩阿其親戚，言於恭宗。 Gao You, son of the Attendant Gao Dan, and a nephew of Duan Ba, among others, believed that Hao was favoring his own kin and reported this to Emperor Gongzong.

恭宗以浩為不平，聞之於世袓。 Emperor Gongzong, judging Hao's conduct unfair, reported the matter to Emperor Shizu.

浩對曰：「前亦言訢合選，但以其先行在外，故不取之。」 Hao replied, "I had said earlier that Xin was qualified, but because he was already away on assignment I did not name him."

浩為司徒，奏徵為其中郎，辭疾不赴。 When Hao became Minister of Works he recommended Kua as Palace Gentleman; Kua pleaded illness and stayed away.

與浩相見，延留數日，惟飲酒談敍平生，不及世利。 On meeting Hao he lingered several days, drinking and recalling their past alone, never speaking of worldly gain.

浩每欲論屈之，竟不能發言。 Hao meant each time to argue him into compliance, yet could never bring himself to begin.

浩後遂投詔書於夸懷，亦不開口。 Hao then thrust the imperial edict into Kua's robe; Kua still would not speak.

夸曰：「桃簡，卿已為司徒，何足以此勞國士也。 Kua said, "Taojian, you are already Minister of Works—what need is there to weary a man of the realm with such a thing?

桃簡，浩小名也。 Taojian was Hao's childhood name.

浩慮夸即還。 Hao feared Kua would return home at once.

時乘一騾，更無兼騎，浩乃以夸騾內之廐中，冀相維縶。 Kua had come on a single mule with no second mount; Hao stabled the mule in his own stable, hoping to hold him back.

浩知而歎曰：「眭夸獨行士，本不應以小職辱之。 Learning this, Hao sighed: "Sui Kua is a man who walks alone; he should never have been pressed with a petty office.

浩仍相左右，始得無坐。 Hao continued to shield him until he escaped punishment.

及浩誅，為之素服，受鄉人弔唁，經一時乃止。 When Hao was put to death, Kua wore plain mourning, received condolences from his neighbors, and only after a time laid it aside.

歎曰：「崔公既死，誰能更容眭夸！」 He sighed, "Lord Cui is dead—who will shelter Sui Kua now?"

始魏初鄧淵撰代記十餘卷，其後崔浩典史，游雅、高允、程駿、李彪、崔光、李琰之世修其業。 At the founding of Wei, Deng Yuan compiled the Annals of the Dynasty in more than ten scrolls. Later Cui Hao directed the historiography, and You Ya, Gao Yun, Cheng Jun, Li Biao, Cui Guang, and Li Yanzhi carried on the tradition through successive generations.

浩為編年體，彪始分作紀表志傳，書猶未出。 Hao wrote in annalistic form; Biao first organized the work into annals, tables, treatises, and biographies, but the history had still not been published.
