武帝末，戾太子敗，燕王旦、廣陵王胥行驕嫚，後元二年二月上疾病，遂立昭帝為太子，年八歲。 Late in Emperor Wu's reign, after the defeat of Crown Prince Li, King Dan of Yan and King Xu of Guangling both acted with arrogance and contempt. In the second month of Houyuan 2, when Emperor Wu fell ill, he made the future Emperor Zhao crown prince; Zhao was eight years old.

夏陽男子張延年詣北闕，自稱衛太子，誣罔，要斬。 A man of Xiayang named Zhang Yannian went to the north gate and claimed to be Crown Prince Wei. For this deception, he was executed by decapitation at the waist.
