以諫議大夫唐汭、膳部郎中知制誥陳乂並為給事中，充樞密院直學士。 Tang Rui, Remonstrance Counsellor, and Chen Yi, bureau director of the Board of Rites and drafter of edicts, were both made Supervising Secretaries and appointed direct academicians of the Bureau of Military Affairs.

陳乂，薊門人也。 Chen Yi was a native of Jimen.

乂性陰僻，寡與人合，不為當路所與。 Yi was secretive and withdrawn, seldom got along with others, and was not favored by those in power.

乂微有才術，嘗自恃其能。 Yi had modest talent and once relied heavily on his own ability.

然乂性孤執，尤廉於財。 Yet Yi was solitary and stubborn and especially scrupulous about money.

人或有獻可於乂，宜陳一謳頌以稱晉高祖之美，可邀其厚賄耳。 Some advised Yi to present a eulogy praising the Gaozu of Jin and thereby win a generous reward.

乂曰：「人生貧富，咸有定分，未有持天子命違禮以求利，既損國綱，且虧士行，乂今生所不為也。」 Yi said, "Whether life is poor or rich has its fixed allotment. No one who bears Heaven's Son's command should violate ritual to seek profit—this harms the state's norms and shames a scholar's conduct. That is something I will never do in this life."

晉高祖即位，贈禮部尚書。 When the Gaozu of Jin took the throne, Yi was posthumously awarded minister of rites.

又其所用多非其人，給事中陳乂，為人險譎，好陰謀，嘗事梁張漢傑，又事郭崇韜，兩人皆輒敗死，弘昭乃引以為樞密直學士，而用其謀。 They staffed posts with the wrong men. Chen Yi, a supervisory attendant, was devious and loved intrigue. He had served Zhang Hanjie of Liang and Guo Chongtao—both destroyed. Hongzhao still made him a direct academician of the Bureau of Military Affairs and followed his counsel.
