大通元年，隸領軍曹仲宗伐渦陽。 In the first year of Datong he served under Commander-in-Chief Cao Zhongzong in the attack on Guoyang.

自春至冬，數十百戰，師老氣衰，魏之援兵復欲築壘於軍後，仲宗等恐腹背受敵，謀欲退師。 From spring through winter they fought scores of engagements until the army was worn down. Wei relief columns tried to build fortifications behind the Liang lines. Zhongzong and the others, fearing encirclement, planned to pull back.

仲宗壯其計，乃從之。 Zhongzong was impressed and agreed.
