在襄陽拜表北伐，遣長史柳津、司馬董當門，壯武將軍杜懷寶、振遠將軍曹義宗等衆軍進討，剋平南陽、新野等郡，魏南荊州刺史李志據安昌城降，拓地千餘里。 At Xiangyang he memorialized for a northern campaign and sent chief clerk Liu Jin, marshal Dong Dangmen, martial valor general Du Huaibao, far-shaking general Cao Yizong, and others with the armies; they took Nanyang, Xinye, and other commanderies, Wei's south Jingzhou inspector Li Zhi surrendered Anchang fortress, and territory expanded more than a thousand li.

因命司馬硃思遠、寧蠻長史曹義宗、中兵參軍孟惠俊擊志於潺溝，大破之，生擒志長史杜景。 He then ordered Chief Administrator Zhu Siyuan, Chief Clerk for Pacifying the Barbarians Cao Yizong, and Central Army Aide Meng Huijun to attack Zhi at Chan'gou. They won a great victory and took Zhi's chief clerk Du Jing alive.

梁將曹義宗圍荊州，勑羆與別將裴衍率兵赴救。 When Liang general Cao Yizong besieged Jing Province, an edict sent Wang Pi with separate commander Pei Yan to relieve the city.

梁復遣曹義宗衆數萬圍荊州，堰水灌城，不沒者數板。 Liang sent Cao Yizong back with tens of thousands of men, dammed the river, and flooded the city until only a few courses of wall stood above the water.

彌歷三年，義宗方退。 Three years passed before Cao Yizong finally withdrew.
