御史步際桐言出結徒虛文，則徐以彼國重然諾，不肯出結，愈不能不向索取，持之益堅。 Censor Bu Jitong argued that demanding written pledges was mere empty form. Lin replied that since the British prized their word, their refusal to sign made the demand all the more necessary, and he held his ground more firmly.
